Every new iPhone 4 purchased through Sept. 30 will be eligible for a variety of free cases, and those who already purchased one will receive a refund, Apple announced on Friday.
Apple will offer its own bumpers, but said it cannot make the cases fast enough for customers, so it will source some other cases from other vendors and give users a choice of options. Users will be able to pick which one they would like.
Customers can apply for their free case on Apple's website starting late next week. "Pick a case, zoom, we'll send it off to you," Jobs reportedly said. "That simple."
In addition, customers who are still unhappy with the iPhone 4 can return their handset undamaged within 30 days for a full refund. Users can return before or after they've received their free case.
"No restocking fee or anything," Jobs said. "We want to take care of everyone. We want every user to be happy."

updated MacBook Air

Apple is preparing to take the wraps off its heavily-updated MacBook Air, its poshest laptop which hasn’t really seen significant improvement since introduction.
The new model will feature an 11.6-inch display and an Intel Core i-series ultra-low voltage processor, Digitimes tells us. The new MacBook Air is expected to reach us in the second half of 2010, at about the same time as the new model of iPod touch.
The new model will be slimmer and lighter even than before, presumably attracting reasonably affluent mobile workers who chose the original MacBook Air for the same reason.
The report also confirms previous claims that the iPod touch will carry a camera, a 3-megapixel CCD, which we've heard as well. Other publications have said it would carry a 5-megapixel camera, as used in the iPhone.
Apple isn’t expected huge sales of the MacBook Air, targeting 400,000 units in 2010. iPod touch shipments are pegged for 17-18 million, the report said.
Both models will be manufactured by Quanta Computer, the report claims.

The 4.0 window for 3GS, ipt3G, + iPhone4 SHSH blobs is closing soon! Backup your blobs using http://is.gd/dskh9 or Cydia
Hey guys, I recommend any iPhone 4 users who need jailbreak or unlock use http://3.ly/zN58 to back up their SHSHs NOW, and not upgrade.
iOS SDK and iOS 4.1 beta are now available from the iPhone Dev Center. Apps built with iOS SDK 4.1 beta should only be tested on devices running iOS 4.1. Make sure to read the Xcode 3.2.4 Readme and the iOS SDK 4.1 beta Release Notes before installing and downloading these new releases.

4.1 Has just been seeded to developers
Xcode
Xcode can hang sometimes when doing a clean build if you are running on Mac OS X 10.6.3 or lower. To fix this problem please upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.4 (Software update to Snow Leopard).
Debugger
When debugging your multitasking enabled app, avoid manually pausing and continuing from the debugger when the application is suspended in the background. Pausing an application that is suspended in the background disrupts proper multitasking behavior until the application is relaunched.
GameKit
Support for the iOS 4 preview version of Game Center will be phased out soon. Only applications that are using the version of Game Center in iOS 4.1 or greater will be supported.
*For this release, GameKitPreview.h was renamed Gamekit.h.
*The auto-matching service does not yet support player attributes. Player attributes can be used in your code but are ignored by the server.
*For iOS 4.1, the string format used by the playerID property (of the GKPlayer class) changed.
MapKit
*All MKOverlayView objects added to a map view are now composited into a single Core Animation layer. Previously each MKOverlayView had its own layer.
Nike
*The Nike + iPod application does not allow syncing workouts over the air in the seed. Syncing through iTunes works as expected.
Media Player
*If your application plays background audio, it is recommended that you implement support for remote-control events to let users control the audio directly from the application switcher
UIKit
*Setting some animatable properties inside a transition animation block may not work.
*The default behavior for the new UIView block-based animation API in iOS 4 is to disable user interactions across the whole interface while the animation is playing. Developers should not rely on this behavior remaining the default as it may be reversed in future releases, thereby allowing user interactions to occur by default while the animation is playing. Programs compiled against iPhone SDK 4 will continue to work as-is, but code compiled under future versions of the SDK may require setting a different option flag to enable the original behavior.
*The default behavior for the new UIView block-based animation API in iOS 4 is to inherit the animation duration from an enclosing animation block (when present). Developers should not rely on this behavior remaining the default, as it may be reversed in future releases, thereby preventing animations from automatically inheriting the duration of their enclosing animation. Programs compiled against iPhone SDK 4.0 will continue to work as-is but code compiled under future versions of the SDK may require setting a different option flag to enable the original behavior.

If Apple were to issue a recall
If Apple were to issue a recall for the iPhone 4 it could cost the company up to $1.5 billion, according to Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi.
Barrons reports that the Sacconaghi believes the time has come for Apple to “explicitly and constructively address the iPhone 4’s reception problems - ideally with an explanation for the root cause of the antenna issue, and a solution(s) for addressing it.”
An in-store fix would cost Apple approximately $75 a piece, or $450 million assuming 6 million units. A full recall could run $250 a phone, or an estimated $1.5 billion.
Sacconaghi thinks a more likely solution will be the issuance of free bumpers costing the company about a dollar each.

Possible iphone4 recall ?????
Apple has given no indication that it will even entertain the notion of an iPhone 4 product recall, let alone actually implement one. But growing calls from inside the tech world and mounting pressure from consumers and media outlets to repair the "Death Grip" may not leave Apple with much of a choice but to do so... and soon.
On the heels of the house-rocking Consumer Reports tests that were published to Apple's chagrin, further evidence that the iPhone 4's reception problems are related to hardware flaws, not software bugs may have put the final nail in the coffin for Apple on this issue. And while the jury will be officially out until Cupertino releases their promised and much awaited software update (and supposed fix), few are holding their breath in anticipation of the update actually solving the problem.
Today, our friends at Cult of Mac presented comments from PR experts who say that a massive recall could be the only way out of this PR nightmare for Apple. Because, while the sales for the iPhone 4 remain staggering, the lingering effects of this debacle - including future sales of future gen iPhones - could be irreparably damaged if the company further botches the handling of the Death Grip and its ultimate repair.
“Apple will be forced to do a recall of this product,” warns Professor Matthew Seeger, a so-called "expert in crisis communication." He adds: “It’s critically important. The brand image is the most important thing Apple has. This is potentially devastating.” Chiming in on the matter is Dr. Larry Barton, another authority on crisis management and the author of "Crisis Leadership Now." Barton says: “Apple needs to put this fire out now. There has to be a military-like response to this issue. And we have not seen this kind of urgency.”
So far, Apple's best efforts have been to (1) deny the problem (2) try to make us think it's a software issue (3) delete negative threads about the Death Grip on Apple.com. Hardly seems like the proper way for an organization of this size to manage a crisis. And perhaps for this very reason, Apple will soon take unprecedented steps to undo the damage done by the device's flaws, and the company's own flawed response to the matter.

Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone
Lab tests: Why Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4
Lab test: Apple iPhone 4 design defect confirmed
We reached this conclusion after testing all three of our iPhone 4s (purchased at three separate retailers in the New York area) in the controlled environment of CU's radio frequency (RF) isolation chamber. In this room, which is impervious to outside radio signals, our test engineers connected the phones to our base-station emulator, a device that simulates carrier cell towers (see video: IPhone 4 Design Defect Confirmed). We also tested several other AT&T phones the same way, including the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre. None of those phones had the signal-loss problems of the iPhone 4.
The tests also indicate that AT&T's network might not be the primary suspect in the iPhone 4's much-reported signal woes.
One solution to the Apple iPhone 4's antenna
problem is to cover the lower left corner with tape.
problem is to cover the lower left corner with tape.
The signal problem is the reason that we did not cite the iPhone 4 as a "recommended" model, even though its score in our other tests placed it atop the latest Ratings of smart phones that were released today.
The iPhone scored high, in part because it sports the sharpest display and best video camera we've seen on any phone, and even outshines its high-scoring predecessors with improved battery life and such new features as a front-facing camera for video chats and a built-in gyroscope that turns the phone into a super-responsive game controller. But Apple needs to come up with a permanent—and free—fix for the antenna problem before we can recommend the iPhone 4.
[UPDATE: Some commentary suggests we've retracted an earlier recommendation of the iPhone 4. In fact, our first blog on the iPhone 4's performance, and a followup comparing it to the Motorola Droid X, were based on preliminary testing, as we stated. Those earlier tests did not address antenna performance. We recommend products only after all tests are complete, and as part of our full smart phone Ratings. —Paul Reynolds]
If you want an iPhone that works well without a masking-tape fix, we continue to recommend an older model, the 3G S. (The full list of recommended smart phones models appears as part of our latest Ratings, available to subscribers.)

Geohot Withdraws from iPhone Jailbreak and Unlock Scene
By Taimur Asad | July 12th, 2010
In an unexpected update to his last blog post titled “Meh”, Geohot has announced that he, for the time being at least has kind of abandoned the whole iPhone jailbreak and unlock scene. The reasons according to him are as follows.

"Sorry, this post was probably a bad idea. Next time I won’t say anything. I miss when this blog was actually about technical things(I’ve been reacting too much to the feedback, which led it to the place it’s in now). I didn’t fully realize most of the current scene don’t care unless they are getting something. Now I do. It’s late tonight, I’ll think about what to do about this in the morning.
The real reason behind no release isn’t technical. It’s just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered. I miss the days when jailbreaking and unlocking were difficult, it attracted a much higher caliber crowd.
Also, to the haters, the picture is quite obviously fake
"
While I respect this guy for all his contributions in the past, and I understand the reasons he has put in, there is still something about this whole story which makes me wonder if Apple has something to do with this. Maybe he was offered money?, or maybe he was threatened with criminal charges for continuing? well who knows. He showed off a untethered jailbreak for new iPhone and iPod touches back in March, followed by a jailbreak for iPad and iOS 4 Beta in April, but none of them ever saw light of day makes no sense to me.
For those of you who don’t know, George Hotz (Geohot) is the guy who first unlocked the original iPhone in 2007, followed by first jailbreak for iPhone 3GS, and then later he was the first one to provide all-in-one jailbreak / unlock solution for iPhone 3.1.2 firmware through his famous tool, named blackra1n and blacksn0w.
So where does that leave us – the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) and iPod touch 3G users? Well, Comex’s Spirit like jailbreak tool is now the only hope. It will probably be released once Apple rolls out the new iOS 4.0.1 / 4.1 firmware update for iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G.
This is pretty awful news....
